The universities we aim for ask for certified English, often around C1. Speaking well in class is not enough to follow a lecture, write an essay or sit an interview.
The TOEFL and IELTS measure academic English: reading long texts, writing, listening. A benchmark often cited: TOEFL around 100, IELTS around 7, close to C1. The United States often asks for the TOEFL. Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial often ask for the IELTS.
Progress in English is steadier than on the SAT. The work stays daily: guided reading, then mock tests.
The choice between TOEFL and IELTS depends on the target university. The English work is the same either way. We do not start with a calendar of exam dates.
